Case Study: How Pistachio Went From Sofa to Semi Finals
When Pistachio first arrived at the Academy, her only recorded athletic achievement was a long lie in on a radiator. Eight weeks later, she was a semi finalist in the Open Pounce. This is her story, told with her permission, which she granted by looking away.
Week one: assessment
Our assessors recorded Pistachio’s baseline. She could run, but only toward food. She could jump, but only onto things she had been told not to. Her attention span was measured at the length of a feather’s flutter, then rounded up out of kindness.
Weeks two to four: foundation
Coach Valdez built a programme around Pistachio’s strengths. She noticed that Pistachio would do anything if it was done secretly, so all training was conducted behind a cardboard box labelled “Nothing is happening here.”
Pistachio completed:
- Forty small pounces on a rolled sock
- Twelve medium pounces on a larger sock
- One large pounce on a sock that turned out to be a hand
Weeks five to six: mental conditioning
Dr Quill introduced visualisation. Pistachio was asked to picture the perfect pounce. She pictured it so clearly that she fell asleep, which the Academy counts as a full session.
Week seven: the break through
In a trial against Brigadier Noodle, Pistachio waited eleven minutes without moving, then launched across the mat in one motion and landed on a toy mouse. Noodle, who had not noticed the contest had started, lodged a protest. It was overruled.
“I did not think about it,” said Pistachio. “I thought about nothing, and then I was in the air.”
Week eight: the semi final
Pistachio narrowly lost the semi final to a visiting cat named Dumpling, who is built like a loaf and moves like a fridge door. The judges commended her for effort and her impression of a loaf.
Lessons for other athletes
Progress is rarely a straight line. It is more often a curve with a nap in the middle. Pistachio now trains four days a week and rests for the other four, a ratio the Academy considers ideal.
Applications for our eight week Foundation Programme are open. Socks are provided.
